THE RACE

Oxford Cambridge Lightweight Boat Race, founded 1975

The Lightweight Boat Race, between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge was founded in 1975 by Richard Bates of St. John's College, Cambridge and raced over 2000 meters in Henley on Thames until 2018. For the first time, on 23rd March 2019 the race was held on the Tideway in London over the same Championship Course as the open weight University Boat Races.

Oxford won the toss and chose the Surrey Station. The verdict was an Oxford win by 2 1/4 lengths in a time of 17:43.

The race was streamed live on YouTube and is available to watch at the link below.

The Lightweight Women's Boat Race joined the Henley Boat Races in 1984 and raced there until 2019. The 2020 race will be the first time that OUWLRC and CUWBC Lightweights race each other on the Tideway.
